First Communion & Confirmation
St Monica Parish – Nepean
“Let the children come to me…” — Luke 18:16
Welcome to the Journey
Receiving the Sacraments of First Holy Communion and Confirmation is a sacred and joyful milestone in a person’s faith journey. At St Monica Parish, we walk alongside families, children, teens, and adults to help them prepare with faith, understanding, and joy.
Whether you are a parent of a young child, a teen exploring your faith, or an adult seeking full communion with the Church—we are here to support you.
For Children – Elementary School Age
General Preparation
Most children begin their journey through their Catholic elementary school, where catechesis (religious formation) takes place in:
- Grade 2 – First Reconciliation and First Communion
- Grade 6 – Confirmation
These are the typical years, but they are not fixed. If your child is in another grade and you feel they are ready, we will work with your family to prepare them for a future Easter celebration.
Immediate Preparation
This part happens at home, with parents as the primary guides, supported by our parish. It includes:
- Parent-child workbooks provided by the parish
- Commitment to regular Sunday Mass as a family
- Family-based reflection beginning in October, with the celebration usually held in the Easter season
We recognize that every family’s schedule and journey is different. Sacraments can be celebrated in a later Easter season if more time is needed.
For Teens & Adults
Teens and adults preparing for First Communion and Confirmation follow a process similar to the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults/Youth).
- Preparation typically begins in September or October
- If the person is already baptized, they will receive First Communion and Confirmation together
- These sacraments are usually celebrated at a special Mass at the Cathedral with the Archbishop, around Pentecost
This is a beautiful and transformative experience, often shared with others who are exploring or returning to the Catholic faith.
