As fasting signals our commitment to make room for Christ and let go of all that prevents us from being more like him, Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast for those ages 18 – 59, and days of abstinence (no meat) for those 14 and older. This means eating only one regular meal and two small ones and avoiding meat entirely. The days of abstinence also apply to the Fridays of Lent. If you have a medical condition that would make it imprudent for you to observe this, give extra time to prayer instead. Parents should introduce their children to this observance as they consider appropriate.
